Toddler High Fiber Diet

Fiber is essential to proper digestion, weight maintenance, and internal cleansing. It is unfortunate that many "high" fiber foods are poorly defined and consumers are often left to their own devices to ascertain the relevance of fiber contents. To further complicate the matter are issues of whole "grain" versus whole "wheat" and all the various forms of fiber noted on ingredient labels.

Whole Grain or Whole Wheat

While better than bleached and/or enriched breads, whole wheat on the label is not a guarantee of high fiber or quality fiber. This term simply means that the wheat plant, including the bran, was refined into the product in question. A whole grain product, conversely, also makes use of the plant as a whole, but without extensive refining which yields a more natural and nutritious product. Look for "refined" and "enriched" on the labels. Whole grains do not require enriching as extensive processing has not caused the depletion of B vitamins.
